Black History Month at Wheeler School

Student artwork inspired by traditional african culture Students in kindergarten through grade 5 at Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School participated in art lessons based on famous African Americans, African American history, and African culture in honor of Black History Month during the month of February. Kindergarten students learned about African American artist Faith Ringgold and created art based on her book Tar Beach. First graders created Kente cloth from the African country of Ghana. Second grade students made masks out of clay based on masks from the West coast of Africa. Third grade students made Freedom Quilts based on the quilt codes slaves used to use to escape to freedom. Fourth grade students made watercolor paintings of African Masks and fifth grade students created prints of Adinkra symbols from the country of Ghana.
