Fifth Graders are leaders at Wheeler!

Welcome to the Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School web site. Wheeler School is located in Plainville, Connecticut, a town of 17, 000 in the Farmington Valley just southwest of Hartford. It is one of three elementary schools in the town of Plainville.

Wheeler is a Pre-K through grade 5 school with an enrollment of approximately 300 students for the 2017-18 school year. There are 16 regular education classrooms as well as rooms for art, music, physical education, a library, special education, and general education academic support services. There is also a computer lab at the school where students research topics in social studies or science, work on math tasks, or practice keyboarding. All 5th and 4th grade students have their own assigned chromebooks.

Wheeler students are Leaders of the PACK! As leaders they follow expectations for a positive attitude and good behavior in all areas of the school. They Participate, Achieve, Cooperate and Know that they can! Our mascot for this positive behavior incentive program is Frankie T. Wolf!

The staff includes approximately 25 certified teachers, a school nurse, a school psychologist, and approximately 19 non-certified staff. The majority of staff have many years of experience in education and work hard to ensure that students make progress in all academic areas. Each school year brings the promise of new learning in mathematics, science, social studies and, of course, reading and writing. In addition, there are many opportunities for children to explore and learn in the classroom, on field trips, and during after-school activities.

Wheeler's School Improvement Plan during the 2017-18 school year focused on learning to read for meaning, pleasure and academic purposes. District wide grade levels from all 3 elementary school worked together in professional learning communities to develop learning outcomes for students in each grade level district wide. We will be revisiting school improvement goals based on student needs as we start the school year in September 2017.

Parents of Wheeler School students are committed to a quality education for their children and participate in many ways. Parents attend conferences with teachers and various school events. They volunteer in classrooms and serve on committees at the school and district level. The Wheeler PTO is an organization that actively supports the education of students and provides opportunities for student enrichment and family events. During the past year events included a book fair, pancakes with the principal, game nights, Fall Festival, June Jamboree or a New Britain Rock Cats game, and numerous fundraisers.
